The Senate’s rejection of Peter Dutton’s divisive and hateful changes to citizenship laws is a huge win for multicultural Australia, Greens Immigration and Citizenship spokesperson Nick McKim says.

“Today, the people of Australia have shown what we can achieve when we stand together,” Senator McKim said.

“People who are working, studying and raising families in Australia can now get on with their lives and make choices about their future after they were so unfairly put on hold for months.”

Peter Dutton's denial of care and rights to refugees in his care on Nauru is an attack on their humanity, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"It is simply not acceptable for women to be denied basic health and reproductive rights just because it is politically convenient for Mr Dutton," Senator McKim said.

"These are ideological decisions that must be overturned."

"Basic human rights and freedoms are not negotiable - these women and their children must be brought to Australia immediately."

The creation of a new supersized department of Australia’s security and immigration agencies led by Peter Dutton would move Australia closer to becoming a police state, Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim says.

Settlement in the Manus Island class action is an admission by Peter Dutton that he is responsible for the illegal detention and deliberate harm of people seeking asylum in Australia, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"These 1900 men who sought safety in Australia have lost their freedoms, their families and their futures because of Peter Dutton's decisions," Senator McKim said.

"No amount of money can compensate for this."

Peter Dutton's proposed citizenship changes are xenophobic, unfair and must be rejected by Labor, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"Time and again we have seen Peter Dutton grabbing more power for himself, as he tries to make himself judge, jury and jailor," Senator McKim said.

"Peter Dutton has repeatedly shown he cannot follow the current laws - now he wants to get rid of the right of the courts to correct his unlawful decision."

The Australian government is preparing to completely wash its hands of the men it has detained for four years on Manus Island.

"After four years of hell overseen by the Australian government, these men have now have to make an impossible choice," Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim said.

"The walls of the detention centre were the only thing between asylum seekers and heavy gunfire last month – now Peter Dutton wants to knock down the walls."

Evidence presented to the Senate inquiry into the conditions on Manus Island and Nauru should prompt the immediate closure of both offshore detention centres, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"Australia’s centres on Manus Island and Nauru are inhumane, non-compliant with international obligations, and should immediately be closed and all detainees brought to Australia," Senator McKim said.

Peter Dutton and Malcolm Turnbull's rolling citizenship announcements are a transparently desperate attempt to win back votes from Pauline Hanson and appease the far right of the Liberal Party, Greens Immigration and Citizenship spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"We should be bringing people together, not dividing them through patronising citizenship tests and unnecessary waits for permanent residency and citizenship," Senator McKim said.

"The real problem here is that Peter Dutton's values are not mainstream Australian values.
