Abbott government admits RET review designed to protect big polluters

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says the Abbott government has today admitted it is undermining renewable energy to protect the old coal-fired generators, after comments by Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane on morning radio.

"The Industry Minister has belled the cat on the RET review. He's made it clear this attack on renewable energy is nothing more than a cynical move to prop up old coal-fired power stations," Senator Milne said.

Mining tax abolition deal: PUP helps Tony Abbott justify brutal budget

Greens Leader Christine Milne says the Palmer United Party has done a mean and tricky deal with the Abbott government to turn down revenue and give a big win to mining magnates around Australia.

Abbott and Newman ignore market with coal at all costs agenda

The Abbott and Newman Governments are ignoring dwindling global coal demand and the oversupply of ports in Queensland in their push for mega coal mining in the Galilee Basin with export through the Great Barrier Reef.

"The Abbott and Newman governments are insanely pushing ahead with their industrialisation of the Great Barrier Reef, even though the market reality is that more coal ports for the Reef aren't wanted or needed," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

Greens welcome World Bank decision to offload coal

The Australian Greens have welcomed reports the World Bank will no longer fund coal-fired power stations in poor countries.

This comes on top of the International Energy Agency recently saying that two thirds of the world's coal must stay in the ground to avoid a two degrees rise in average temperatures that would leave millions of people trapped in poverty.

"The World Bank's mission is to assist developing nations out of poverty and part of this solution is to address global warming," Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne
