The arrival of the United Nations Reactive Monitoring Mission in Tasmania puts the onus on Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt to reject the Tasmanian government's plans to log inside the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim again called on the Tasmanian and Commonwealth Governments to accept the decision the World Heritage Committee made in Bonn in June.

Newly appointed Tourism and International Education Minister Richard Colbeck will need to embrace Tasmania’s wilderness values to be a success in the role, Australian Greens Senator Nick McKim says.

“He needs to realise that Tasmania’s wilderness underpins our tourism sector by attracting tourists and international students to Tasmania to visit,” Senator McKim said.

The Australian Greens say the Tasmanian government cannot be trusted to properly assess the environmental impacts of development in national parks and World Heritage areas, for which it has today opened expressions of interest.

"Unfortunately in Tasmania we have a government with the mentality that if you can't dig it up or cut it down then you should put a resort on it. That's a very bad idea," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"The Greens want Tasmania to benefit from a strong tourism industry, so the Hodgman government has to get real.

Tonight I will speak on two projects. They are separated by thousands of kilometres, but both highlight the problems of a one-sided view of the economy-that is, that mining and power production take precedence over all else. Time and again, we see large companies that propose dangerous projects claim they will benefit the local community, but, meanwhile, they walk all over those communities. These companies often ignore local industries as their activities damage the diversity of local economies and the local environment.

Almost three quarters of South Australians want Kangaroo Island to be protected from planned oil and gas drilling, according to polling data released by the Australian Greens today.

A Lonergan poll of 1582 South Australians found only 16 per cent of voters supported the Bight Petroleum proposal for oil and gas exploration in the Kangaroo Island Canyon and Pools.
