Now that the community and the Parliament have forced the Abbott Government to back down on its backward and ideological policies attacking the sick, our universities, students and pensioners, it's time to intensify the campaign and force the Prime Minister to drop the attack on renewable energy, Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne said today.

"Minister Macfarlane asks who is creating the RET uncertainty now? There is only one answer. You are," said Senator Milne.

Origin want to slash the RET target in half, Energy Australia also wants to wind back our RET and AGL want to reduce the RET to protect their investments in their dirty brown coal power-station ‘Loy Yang A’.

Greens Leader Christine Milne says Labor must stay strong and force the Abbott government to back down on cuts to the Renewable Energy Target, the way it is being forced to back down on cuts to universities and Medicare.

"The RET is not broken; the old model of energy generation is broken, but the Liberals are intent on propping it up as long as possible," said Senator Milne.

"Australia's energy future is in renewables, and so are the jobs. If Labor helps the Liberals with this, they'll be destroying jobs and one of the last climate policies standing.

Senator Ricky Muir has this afternoon said in the Senate he will support exemptions for heavy industry and the inclusion of electricity generation from burning native forests within the Renewable Energy Target.

"Exemptions for heavy industry and inclusion of energy generated from burning native forests in the Renewable Energy Target would be a disaster. It would do even more to destroy confidence in Australian clean energy," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

With news today that RET uncertainty has forced Meridian Energy Australia to abandon its Burdekin Hydro project in Northern Queensland, Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne, who is in Lima, says the Abbott government's duplicity has been exposed.

"Julie Bishop is over here in Lima bragging about ARENA and the Renewable Energy Target, but even as she speaks her government's attack on the RET is damaging jobs, investment, and efforts to cut pollution," said Senator Milne.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says the Abbott government must drop its attack on the Renewable Energy Target, as new ABS data confirms renewable energy is hugely popular and a growth market for Australia.

"In three short years the number of Australian households using solar energy has quadrupled from around five per cent to 20 per cent," said Senator Milne.

"At this rate, we're looking at a bright, clean, sustainable future for Australia, but Tony Abbott's Coalition needs to stop demonising renewables.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has backed the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on its most comprehensive scientific assessment to date, which says we will stand no chance of preventing catastrophic
warming if we do not leave the majority of the world's fossil fuel reserves in the ground.

"Coal is bad for humanity, and so is Tony Abbott's denial of global warming science," said Senator Milne.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has commended the leaders of the European Union for today setting an emissions reduction target of 40 per cent by 2030, saying Australia's 2020 target is disastrously inadequate and must be drastically increased for 2030.

"For the health of our communities and the health of our economy, Tony Abbott needs to pull his head out of the sand and get real about action on climate change," said Senator Milne.
