Expansion of income management would dump more pressure on younger Australians

The Australian Greens said today that an expansion of income management would compound the tough social security measures already set to impact young jobseekers.

"The Government has an ideological belief in income management, so in a way I'm not surprised that McClure included it in the interim report. Having spent a fortune on income management to date, there is no measurable benefit of this punitive approach," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on family and community services said today.

Government continues efforts demonise DSP recipients

The Australian Greens said today that the Minister for Social Service is again trying to demonise people with disability by implying they simply opt to apply for the disability support payment because of the higher level of income support it provides.

"The Government is again seeking to stigmatise people who receive income support, especially the DSP, to help with their campaign to cut social security in a bid to save money," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on disabilities said today.

Government must address payment gap to end inequality

The Australia Greens said today the first thing the Government needs to do in social security reform is increase Newstart and Youth Allowance.

"I'm deeply concerned that as Government considers changes to our social security system, people are falling deeper and deeper into poverty and disadvantage because payments are so low. These low payments are themselves barriers to employment," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on family and community services said today.
