Greens will introduce national Dying with Dignity laws

Greens Leader Dr Richard Di Natale has attended the unveiling of Andrew Denton's new organisation Go Gentle Australia, and has committed to introducing Australia's first ever national Dying with Dignity laws during the upcoming term of parliament.

"Dying with dignity is a social justice issue, it's a human rights issue, it's a public health issue and it should not be pushed to the political margins," Senator Di Natale said.

"I welcome Andrew Denton's campaign to bring the need for euthanasia reforms into the spotlight.

That the following bills be introduced: A Bill for an Act to amend certain territory legislation to restore legislative powers concerning euthanasia and to repeal the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997, and for related purposes.

Cross-party push for Territory rights on dying with dignity

Australian Greens leader Dr Richard Di Natale has today reached across party lines to give notice of a co-sponsored bill that would overturn a 20 year old private member's bill by Kevin Andrews that banned the Northern Territory and ACT from legislating dying with dignity laws.

"This bill will help put dying with dignity legislation on the national agenda," said Dr Richard Di Natale.

"As a doctor, when someone gets a terminal diagnosis the feel very anxious about what their final days may bring - this legislation can give comfort at a time of great distress.

This is why we need dying with dignity reform

Cancer sufferer and voluntary euthanasia campaigner, Max Bromson has taken his own life this week. According to reports his family and friends have had their phones and laptops confiscated while there is an investigation into whether they assisted in his suicide.

Australian Greens health spokesperson and former GP, Dr Richard Di Natale, said today that the legal limbo confronting Max’s family is a good example of why we need national dying with dignity laws.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of Max Bromson,” said Senator Di Natale.

Parliament to consider national ‘dying with dignity’ laws

Australian Greens spokesperson health and former GP, Dr Richard Di Natale, today tabled an exposure draft for national ‘dying with dignity’ legislation in the Senate. The Senate then passed a motion to have that bill considered by a Senate Inquiry.

“It can be hard to talk about death but it’s time we put dying with dignity laws firmly on the national agenda,” said Dr Di Natale.

Syme case shows need for euthanasia reform

"Revelations that Melbourne urologist and dying with dignity campaigner Rodney Syme assisted in the suicide of terminally ill man Steve Guest are timely and important," said Greens Health Spokesperson Dr Richard Di Natale today.

"A doctor’s prime concern should be the wellbeing of their patient, right to the very end. When fear of legal repercussions is forcing doctors to say to a suffering patient, ‘sorry, I cannot help you’ there is something wrong with the system. Rodney Symes knew this and so he helped his patient anyway despite the risks to himself.
