State control of environment approvals bad news for Bimblebox

If the Federal Government’s plan to devolve its environment powers to the States goes ahead as planned next year, Campbell Newman will have the final say over whether LNP major donor Clive Palmer will be permitted to turn Bimblebox Nature Refuge into a coal mine.

 

‘This is yet another example of the grave flaws in the Federal Government’s plan to give up its environmental responsibilities to the States,” said Australian Greens environment spokesperson, Senator Larissa Waters.

Fate of Bimblebox Nature Refuge hangs in the balance

 Bimblebox Nature Refuge, a precious 8,000 hectare ecological sanctuary part-established with taxpayers’ money, is under threat from a proposed 30 megatonne open cut coal mine which would directly destroy over half of the refuge.

Australian Greens environment spokesperson Senator Larissa Waters questioned federal department officials in Senate Estimates this week, seeking answers as to how the fate of Bimblebox will be decided.
