Speech: Industrial deaths

I rise on behalf of the Greens to speak on the report on the inquiry into the prevention, investigation and prosecution of industrial deaths in Australia. This inquiry was much needed because the safety of our workers is of utmost importance. We really must have zero tolerance for work related deaths. I started my working life as a civil and structural engineer, so I do know firsthand the dangers that lurk on construction sites, which are among the deadliest sites for workers.

HMAS Albatross PFOS contamination - call for mandatory blood testing for all military personnel and base workers.

All military personnel, staff and base workers who may have been exposed to toxic firefighting foams should be provided with blood tests, Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon said today.

“The Defence Department should offer free blood tests to all military personnel and base workers associated with HMAS Albatross, along HMAS Creswell and the Jervis Bay Range Facility,” Senator Rhiannon said.

Motion: International Students and Jobs

Senator Georgiou: Pursuant to standing order 75, I give notice that today I propose to move "That, in the opinion of the Senate, the following is a matter of urgency:

The Government within a month, reports to the Senate, on the number of jobs which would have been available to Australians but were taken by individuals on international student visas."

Senator RHIANNON (New South Wales) (21:17): The Electoral and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2017 reflects the work of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, of which I am a member. We took a great deal of advice on this matter, and this is the bill that has now come before us. I think it's worth making a few comments about the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters. I certainly feel fortunate to be on the committee.

So Treasurer Scott Morrison and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann look at Bill Shorten and see Jeremy Corbyn or Bernie Sanders, who are accused of being "socialist revisionists" and "the new romantics of protectionism". If only.

Bill Shorten is a milksop compared to Jeremy Corbyn. More on that in a moment.

Meanwhile, the Coalition's economic gurus claim the policies of the Liberal-National parties are "common sense" and not driven by ideology.
