Our thoughts are with the people of France after another shocking act of violence towards their peaceful country.

On behalf of the Australian Greens I extend our sincere condolences to the victims, their loved ones, and all those who will be forever changed by what they experienced today.

This horrendous crime occurs at a time when the world is still reeling from the senseless acts of violence in Istanbul and Dallas. In the face of attacks like this we must strengthen our commitment to peaceful democracy, respect for diversity and building cohesion in our global community.

"The Australian Greens respect the vote of the British people today but we share in the disappointment of our UK Greens colleagues who campaigned strongly for the UK to remain in the EU," said Australian Greens Leader Richard Di Natale.

"The result highlights the need to bring people together if we want to be an outward focussed and confident nation that works for the common good.

"Instead the Prime Minister is launching another scare campaign to further lower the tone of an election campaign that is near rock bottom.

Fresh evidence that the Government of Sri Lanka used cluster bombs in Tamil civilian areas during the civil war in 2009 must not be ignored by the currently sitting UN Human Rights Council, said Australian Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon.

"This evidence is further proof of what survivors of the conflict spoke of seven years ago," said Senator Rhiannon.

"A recently published testimonial by Dr Varatharajah, a doctor working in the former conflict zone, also confirmed the use of cluster bombs on civilian populations.

The Australian Greens are joining parliamentarians around the world in advocating for the right of the West Papuan people to determine their own political future.

"On the eve of our own election being called, how can we stand by and watch democracy fail so spectacularly for one of our close neighbours?" asked Australian Greens Leader Richard Di Natale, who in 2012 launched Australia's chapter of the International Parliamentarians for West Papua.

Our hearts go out to those impacted by the devastating attack on families celebrating Easter at a public park in Lahore this weekend.

The killing of around 65 innocent people and the wounding of many more, mostly women and children, is an atrocity.

For the international community it is an almost overwhelming tragedy, coming so soon after the senseless violence that killed at least 28 people in Brussels and 41 in Baghdad.

On behalf of the Australian Greens I wish to extend my most heartfelt condolences to the people of Brussels, particularly those who have lost loved ones in this awful, senseless attack.

We must all join in condemning such violent and criminal acts and must not allow fear to divide our community. 

At a time when peace and security are under threat around the world, we must come together, to ensure that the perpetrators of these terrible acts are brought to justice.
