WA Light Rail funding should be guaranteed post-election

The Greens have called on Tony Abbott to withdraw his threat to all urban rail funding while the Barnett Government and Canberra bicker over which parts of Perth should be served by light rail.

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam said that arguments over an extra 7km of light rail line paled by comparison to the Federal Coalition's plan to abolish urban rail funding.

"Canberra is right that light rail should go to the universities, and the Premier is right about taking the system into the northern suburbs - but Western Australia will get neither if Tony Abbott has his way.

"Premier Barnett needs to push his fellow Liberal, Tony Abbott, to abandon his plan to axe national funding for urban rail. There's half a billion dollars in the Federal Budget for rail in Western Australia - if the Coalition gets into office, it's gone.

"Perth is choking on congestion, we need to cut down on pollution, and the price of oil is rising: Perth needs light rail. You can put 180 passengers on a single three-carriage tram, you can run light rail on renewable energy - you can't do these things with buses.

"The WA Greens have been promoting a metropolitan-wide light rail system for years. The Premier should embrace the Greens' plan for comprehensive light rail for Perth - and join us in standing up to Tony Abbott's plan to scrap the lot."
