The Australian Greens said today Government's has shown a lack of understanding of the community's dislike for their cruel budget cuts to social security by gagging debate on legislation in the Parliament.
"The Government are forcing their Social Services and Other Legislation Amendment 2014 Budget Measures 1 & 2 Bills through the House, minimising the opportunity for proper scrutiny and debate," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on family and community services said today.
"These two massive pieces of legislation contain the Government's cruel welfare regime and threaten to affect the income support and assistance provided to millions of Australians.
"Those people who would be affected by these changes are being ignored by Government, and their MPs are being denied the opportunity to engage in the debate around this legislation.
"The Government knows their budget is cruel and unpopular. They're simply trying to force these measures through as quickly as possible in the hope we will all just forget about them. My message to Tony Abbott and the Government is that you cannot hide.
"These Bills are being examined by a Senate Inquiry, which must be allowed to properly examine them- something the Government has not given the community any opportunity to do.
"The Greens will stand up to any Government attempt to shortcut democracy in the Senate," Senator Siewert concluded.
