Statement on pre-selection of Nick McKim for impending Senate vacancy
Australian Greens Senator for Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson, enthusiastically welcomes the pre-selection of Nick McKim for the impending Senate vacancy made by the imminent retirement of Senator Christine Milne.
Senator Whish-Wilson said, “The Greens members have made a superb choice in pre-selecting Nick McKim to partner with me in representing Tasmania in the Senate.
“Nick is one of the most accomplished and experienced politicians to be pre-selected for a Senate position in our party’s history.
“He has been a state MP for 13 years, won his seat at 4 consecutive elections and was the first Greens MP ever to be appointed to a Ministry.
“Together, Nick and I will endeavour to be a formidable team in the Senate, fighting hard for the environment, social justice and a fair go for Tasmania.
“I want to thank the Tasmanian Greens party for co-ordinating this pre-selection with a fully democratic ballot among members deciding the outcome. This is the first time for the Tasmanian Greens and is unique among established political parties.
“There was a very strong pool of talent for the members to choose from and all the candidates should be proud of their involvement,” he concluded.
