Sporting clubs should drop EnergyWatch as sponsor immediately: Greens

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 5 Apr 2012

Australian Greens’ spokesperson for sport and multiculturalism today called on the Melbourne Football Club, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Rebels to drop EnergyWatch as a sponsor following the vile racist slurs by its CEO and co-owner, Ben Polis.

“No organisation, especially sporting organisations, should align themselves with someone who peddles such hurtful and vile comments,” said Senator Di Natale.

“One of the great aspects of sport is that it can bring communities together and promote mutual respect and understanding so it is particularly damaging for sporting codes to be associated with these kinds of racial slurs.

“All sponsorship relationships with EnergyWatch should be dropped immediately. The sporting codes need to send a message that these sorts of comments are unacceptable.

“The AFL has a proud history of proactively tackling racism and sexism in sport so I implore the Melbourne Football Club to act swiftly.”

The business practices of Mr Polis are also under question.  The ACCC has also taken action against EnergyWatch for misleading consumers and environment groups are campaigning against EnergyWatch’s ‘carbon tax collector’ advertisements.

“Consumers have plenty of reasons to think twice before purchasing services from EnergyWatch.”
