Greens Deputy Leader Adam Bandt has welcomed the government finally seeing sense on the freezing of medical research funding, but says other areas of science and research are still at risk.
Mr Bandt says the government must lift the freeze and quarantine from cuts other research and innovation funding, including university research, Australian Research Council and Cooperative Research Centres, in the upcoming mid year Budget (MYEFO).
"I welcome the lifting of the freeze on NHMRC grants. It was always folly to threaten medical research," Mr Bandt said.
"But other areas of the research, science and innovation Budget are at risk from Labor's cuts."
"Labor's surplus straight jacket is putting at risk research and development which is crucial to our economy."
"I hope Mr Swan will see sense."
