HANDS OFF OUR ENVIRO LAWS

Abbott and Brandis want to put big mining companies above the law and stop Australians who care about the environment and climate from having a say. The Federal Court overturned the Environment Minister Greg Hunt’s approval of the Adani coal mine because the community pointed out he failed in his obligations as the Environment Minister.

Instead of fixing its mistake, the government wants to change the law so that only people who live next door to a mine can have a say.

The Labor Party and Senator Lazarus have already said that they will stand with the Greens to oppose the government’s attack on our democracy.

Will you ask the other crossbenchers to stand with us too?

Remember – we don’t know whether they plan to support the government or stand in opposition, you are just calling to let them know that you want them to stand against the government’s repeal of our environmental laws.

Make sure you introduce yourself on the phone, let them the crossbencher's office know if you live in their state and make sure you are always polite.

After you have made a call or two please click here to let us know who you called and how satisfied you were with the response from their office.

 Some key points to mention:

1 // It sets a dangerous precedent if government’s start responding to judicial decisions they don’t like by changing the law.

2 // The “lawfare” the Abbott Government is referring to simply does not exist. According to the Australia Institute, 3rd party appeals to the Federal Court have only affected 0.4% of all projects referred under the legislation.

3 // You shouldn’t have to live next door to a giant coal mine or coal seam gas to have the right to ask the courts to uphold the environmental laws that protect our land, air and water.
