Greens welcome further Australian aid for Nepal

Media Release
Christine Milne 1 May 2015

Greens Leader Christine Milne says Nepal is still in crisis, almost a week after the earthquake hit, and Australia must do more to help.

"There's a huge amount of concern around our country right now. People are worried, they want to help. We all want to see more stories of survival," said Senator Milne.

"Australia can send more money, and I'm pleased the Foreign Minister has announced a further $5 million in aid funding . We should also send more military personnel and search and rescue capacity, as this is a role which the ADF is well equipped and experienced in.

"More than 5000 people are already confirmed to have died in this disaster, but Nepal's army chief is expecting that to triple.

"There are still so many remote communities that haven't received any help at all.

"It's clear foreign aid is critically important and the Greens will stand against further cuts to the foreign aid budget," said Senator Milne.

"Let's have our government use our tax dollars to reflect the goodwill that is apparent in so many conversations across the country.

"Let's send more help to Nepal and stand ready to help others in their most dire times of need."
