Barnaby Joyce poses a real danger to river plan

Media Release
Sarah Hanson-Young 17 Nov 2012

The Greens have said today that Barnaby Joyce is a danger to the river and the Government is at real risk of locking in environmental failure if it weakens the Murray Darling Basin Plan at the demand of the Coalition.

“Barnaby Joyce is hoping to make a deal with the Government that would line the pockets of big irrigators while condemning the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth to environmental failure,” Greens’ Murray Darling spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“Over the next fortnight the Greens will be seeking to amend two Water Bills that are currently before the Parliament, ensuring that an absolute minimum of 3200GL be returned to the environment.

“The Government has a decision to make; will it support Barnaby Joyce in his attempts to pork barrel the big irrigators upstream or will it work with the Greens to save the river?

“I will be meeting with Minister Burke over the coming days to negotiate a Plan that will support river communities by guaranteeing the long term environmental survival of Australia’s most crucial water system.”
