Al-Sisi must pardon Greste

Media Release
Scott Ludlam 24 Sep 2015

Greens Foreign Affairs spokesperson Scott Ludlam says it is great news that jailed Al Jazeera journalists Mohamad Fahmy and Baher Mohamed have been pardoned by Egyptian President al-Sisi, but is dismayed that this clemency has not yet been extended to their Australian colleague Peter Greste.

"We are thrilled for Mohamad and Baher and their families, who have been so strong throughout this drawn out injustice of 21 months in prison for doing their jobs," said Senator Ludlam.

"Journalism is not a crime, and the Al Jazeera journalists should never have been imprisoned in the first place.

"It's shocking and unjust that clemency has not yet been extended to Peter Greste, whose convictions remain.

"If justice is to truly be served by Egypt, then everyone who was convicted as part of this farcial case must have their names cleared.

"The Australian Greens will continue to fight for freedom for the press, including full justice for Peter Greste and the other defendants who have not yet been pardoned," Senator Ludlam said.
