Abbott’s spin on pokies needs a limit: Greens

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 10 May 2012

Greens’ gambling spokesperson, Senator Richard Di Natale, said today that the Greens have a solution for Tony Abbott’s new found concern for problem gamblers.

“It’s been astounding to see Tony Abbott feigning concern that the schoolkids’ bonus could be wasted on the pokies,” said Senator Di Natale.

“This is the same man who acted as the mouthpiece for Clubs Australia in their misleading and deceptive campaign against mandatory pre-commitment.

“But if Mr Abbott has had a sudden change of heart the Greens have a ready-made solution for Tony Abbott’s new found concern for problem gamblers and their families – $1 bet limits.

“At the moment the $818 bonus could be lost in about 45 minutes. But it would take almost seven hours to lose that much money, if there was a $1 limit on bets.

“My bill for $1 bet limits is already before the Senate with the crossbench as co-sponsors. Coalition support would see it pass.

“If Tony Abbott is really afraid of money for school books being wasted on pokies then he should help the Greens institute a $1 bet limit per spin. If not he should limit his own spin.
