Four Corners exposes crisis in nation’s recycling industry while government sits silent

Greens spokesperson on Waste & Recycling, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, responded to Monday’s 4 Corners program that exposed the crisis in Australia’s recycling industry.

“This problem has been a long time coming. The fall in commodity prices has demolished the previously successful business model based around co-mingled kerbside recycling.

“The response of government to this slow building crisis has been woeful. Millions of Australians have been diligently sorting their rubbish all for nothing. This is an outrage.

Greens call for recycling solution for “end-of-life” tyres

Australian Greens spokesperson for waste and recycling, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, said today that Tasmanians would be questioning why they currently pay a $5 levy if old tyres are not recycled or disposed of properly and only end up polluting our environment.

"Today we are seeing another terrible tyre stockpile fire that has the potential to pollute our air and water in the Tamar Valley," said Senator Whish-Wilson.

Greens Urge Big Three Bottlers to Front Senate CDL Inquiry

Australian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson has called upon Coca-Cola Amatil, Lion Nathan and Schweppes to front the upcoming Senate inquiry into allegations of rorting in state-based container deposit schemes.

“We’ve seen these big companies wheel out their lobby group – the Australian Food & Grocery Council – on the weekend, stating that they plan to front the inquiry,” Senator Whish-Wilson stated.

“While I welcome that undertaking, it is essential that these companies send their own high-level finance representatives – rather than having the AFGC speak for them.
