Logging of karri forests must end to save threatened species
The plight of native forests in south west WA has been highlighted in a visit to the Jamarri Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre by Greens Senator Janet Rice, along with Senator Scott Ludlam, Senator Rachel Siewert and the WA Forest Alliance.
Our precious South West forests are under threat from logging like never before. 600 year old trees are being cut down for woodchips under Barnett. Most Western Australians don’t support logging in our native forests. Only the Greens are standing up for our forests, with a plan to create secure jobs in the South West.
Senator for WA Scott Ludlam has put forest conservation at the centre of the WA by-election campaign, visiting the Challar forest blockade and climbing (with substantial assistance) to a forest protection platform 40 metres up a 400 year-old Karri tree.
Tony Abbott’s new war on Australian forests is further proof that WA Premier Colin Barnett is colluding with Canberra, which will have huge implications for the Liberals in the upcoming Senate by-election.
Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam said WA voters could now add forests to the list of environmental treasures being targeted for destruction by the Abbott-Barnett alliance.
