Greens will use Senate powers to reveal truth on cash bribes for smuggling

The Greens will use parliamentary powers to force the Government to table documents relating to the interception and 'turn-back' of an asylum seeker boat including any payments of monies to individuals on board.  The Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has said the Order to Produce Documents will be put to the Senate as early as Monday next week.

"These allegations are extremely serious and the Parliament has both a right and responsibility to find out what has really been going on," Greens spokesperson for Immigration Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Government must guarantee no more slave-like contracts: Bandt

Greens spokesperson on Industrial Relations Adam Bandt MP today said the government must guarantee there are no more slave-like contracts after it was revealed that Thiess hired skilled migrants on contracts threatening to fire them should they engage in trade union activities and pay the company to find their replacements. Mr Bandt called on the government to investigate the Thiess matter and audit contracts for workers on 457 visas with those companies like Thiess that have been given the power to self-regulate.

Budget 2015 must save science and respect research: Greens

Greens Deputy Leader and science and research spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today called on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to lift investment in science and research in the upcoming Budget, starting by reversing the over $100 million in cuts to the CSIRO and offering a fair pay deal to CSIRO staff. Staff at the CSIRO have today began industrial action after negotiations over pay and conditions stalled.

“Tony Abbott’s last Budget was a killer for science and research,” Mr Bandt said.

More Holden job losses yet Abbott still has no plan for SA: Greens

Responding to reports that a further 270 jobs are to be cut from Holden in South Australia, Greens Deputy Leader and industry spokesperson Adam Bandt MP said SA is bleeding jobs and yet Tony Abbott still has no plan for the state.

"Next month, a further 270 people in South Australia will be out of a job, with no clear options for what is next," Mr Bandt said.

"Tony Abbott is happy to sit back and watch the whole Australian auto industry shut down, seeing tens of thousands of people uprooted or thrown out of work."

Greens Deputy Leader and science and industrial relations spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today called for the government to do for our scientists what it did for our defence personnel and abandon its unfair bargaining policy.

"This government has already cut over $100 million dollars from the CSIRO, seeing hundreds of scientists lose their jobs. Now Tony Abbott is making life harder for the scientists and researchers who remain behind, forcing them to do more for less," Mr Bandt said.

Government ignores white-collar wrongdoing with Trade Union Royal Commission

Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt MP today said the government is continuing to turn a blind-eye to white-collar wrongdoing.

“Where is the Royal Commission into allegations of white-collar wrongdoing, like the financial planning schemes that saw people lose their home or the Reserve Bank bribery scandals?” Mr Bandt said.

“We have heard many stories about the devastation everyday Australians have faced from trusting supposed white-collar experts, yet the government fails to respond.”

Greens urge review to focus on Australian gun laws

Following conflicting reports that the perpetrator of the Sydney Siege may have had a licensed firearm, Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt said the Prime Minister is right to launch a review into the adequacy of our gun laws but the review must avoid becoming an excuse to attack refugees.

"The Greens have been saying for a long time that our gun laws need to be stronger. The tragic events in Sydney earlier this week only strengthens the case for better gun control," said Mr Bandt.

Medical research at risk from Abbott’s tin ear

Greens Deputy Leader and spokesperson on science and research Adam Bandt MP today said that medical research is at risk from Tony Abbott’s arrogance and internal Liberal divisions.

“Internal party tensions and Tony Abbott’s refusal to listen to the parliament is putting the medical research fund at risk,” Mr Bandt said.

Reports emerged today that a government backbench committee has vetoed legislation to establish the medical research fund.
