Cruel policies must be changed as more single parent families face a life of poverty

The Australian Greens said today that the older parties have condemned single parents and their children to poverty and called on them to change their cruel policies.

Melbourne University's latest Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey has found the incidence of poverty among single parent households is more than three times higher than two parent households.

An Abbott budget would heap stress on our poorest people

The Australian Greens said today that some of the poorest people in our community will be placed under even more financial stress if Tony Abbotts's budget becomes a reality.

Community leaders boost calls for a Newstart increase

The Australian Greens have welcomed ongoing support from around the country for a $50 increase to Newstart Allowance, voiced today in an open letter signed by more than forty leaders from the charity, union and community welfare sectors.

"Today's letter shows the diversity and strength of the campaign to deliver a much needed increase to the Newstart Allowance," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

"The Greens have legislation in Parliament to deliver this $50 per week increase to Newstart, backed up with the independent costings to pay for it by fixing the mining tax.
