The Australian Greens have called on the Government to deliver a much needed $50 per week increase to Newstart Allowance, with yet another Senate Inquiry today recommending the inadequate payment be lifted.

The Australian Greens said today that the older parties have condemned single parents and their children to poverty and called on them to change their cruel policies.

Melbourne University's latest Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey has found the incidence of poverty among single parent households is more than three times higher than two parent households.

The Australian Greens believe that the pressures faced by WA's emergency relief organisations are being compounded by January's cuts to single parenting payments.

"It's very concerning that people in WA are being turned away because the amazingly hard working organisations in our not-for-profit sector are under such intense pressure," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

"I have no doubt that organisations are experiencing an increased demand for support as a result of income support cuts to single parents and the ongoing inadequacy of payments like Newstart.

The Australian Greens have expressed deep dismay at the findings in a new Salvation Army report, which show that alarming numbers of people are going without proper food or heating as winter approaches.

The Salvation Army report ‘It's Not Asking Too Much - National Economic and Social Impact Survey 2013' has highlighted the serious consequences of Labor's cuts to single parents and inaction on Newstart.

The Australian Greens said today that some of the poorest people in our community will be placed under even more financial stress if Tony Abbotts's budget becomes a reality.

"Tony Abbott is so preoccupied with keeping big business onside that he's prepared to take already meagre supplement payments of around $4 per week off jobseekers and single parents on Newstart," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on families and community services said today.

The Australian Greens have welcomed ongoing support from around the country for a $50 increase to Newstart Allowance, voiced today in an open letter signed by more than forty leaders from the charity, union and community welfare sectors.

"Today's letter shows the diversity and strength of the campaign to deliver a much needed increase to the Newstart Allowance," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

"The Greens have legislation in Parliament to deliver this $50 per week increase to Newstart, backed up with the independent costings to pay for it by fixing the mining tax.

The Australian Greens are investigating new reports which suggest the Government’s regime of cuts to single parent payments are having additional, painful consequences for parents, ahead of another wave of single parent rallies that will take place this weekend.
