PM Abbott must get real on climate or risk damaging US relationship

The Australian Greens say Tony Abbott is risking Australia's constructive relationship with the United States by seeking to undo existing climate change policies, refusing to put climate on the G20 agenda and retreating from global action.

"Tony Abbott absolutely has his head in the sand on climate change. It's a national disaster and a global embarrassment as China and the USA get serious about the 2015 treaty," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

Protect the RET - renewables helping to cut energy prices

The Australian Greens are welcoming a report from the Clean Energy Council (CEC) that clearly makes the economic case for keeping and lifting Australia's Renewable Energy Target.

"This study supports what the Greens have been saying all along, and that is that shifting to renewable energy will help Australians save money as well as relieving pressure on our climate," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

The CEC modelling shows by 2020, households are set to pay an average $50 less on annual energy bills, than they would if the Renewable Energy Target was weakened.

IPCC: Greens say PM Abbott must stop blocking renewable energy growth

With a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calling for a rapid and radical cut to greenhouse gas emissions, the Australian Greens say it's time for the Abbott government to get out of the way of Australia's transformation into a low-carbon economy.

"The Abbott government needs to give up the protection racket for Australia's big polluters and start protecting communities. They need to get out of the way of the positive transition that's happening and stop trying to take this country backwards," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

Palmer political party’s backflip on renewable energy

Greens Leader Christine Milne says Clive Palmer's backflip on supporting the Renewable Energy Target on ABC's RN Breakfast this morning shows the Palmer political party cannot be trusted and will say and do anything on a whim.

"The Palmer political party is saying whatever it thinks it needs to for electoral gain. This backflip is disgraceful and will sound the alarm not only in Western Australia but with everyone who supports renewable energy," Senator Milne said.

RET review is a RET attack - Greens

The Australian Greens say the Abbott government's RET review is a thinly veiled attack on solar and wind energy in favour of coal energy.

"Reducing our clean energy quota will not make electricity cheaper, it will just make it dirtier," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

"All this hyperventilating we are seeing about energy prices is despite the fact that renewable energy has actually driven down wholesale prices in Australia.

Greens earmark Collie for renewable energy boom

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam was in Collie today talking with locals about the Greens' plans for Collie as a renewable energy generation hub.

Senator Ludlam, who earlier this year released Energy 2029 - a costed, technical plan for how WA's main electricity grid could switch to 100% renewable energy generation - said Collie should be one of five regional Renewable Energy Zones as it had key attributes that made it the right place to generate renewable energy.

"Tony Abbott has cast huge uncertainty over the whole renewable energy industry and if he gets control of both houses of Parliament he will kill clean energy investment in its tracks," Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"People have a clear choice they can vote for the Greens and a renewable energy future or they can vote for Tony Abbott and the ongoing support of coal fired generation and gas.

Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam will join protestors rallying in Fremantle tomorrow - Saturday 17 August - against the controversial method of underground gas extraction known as fracking.
