Abbott government must deny extremist entry to Australia

Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne has called on the Abbott government to deny an extremist alleged to have masterminded anti-Muslim violence in Sri Lanka entry to Australia.

Gnanasara Thero, who has been instrumental in inciting hatred against religious minorities in Sri Lanka and who is the General Secretary of the extremist Bodu Bala Sena sect, has applied for a visa and intends to tour Australia. Gnanasara Thero has reportedly been denied entry to the UK, France and the US.

The Australian Greens want Prime Minister Tony Abbott to join President Barack Obama and others around the world in condemning new laws in Uganda that outlaw homosexuality with sentences of life imprisonment.

"Tony Abbott has a moral obligation to condemn these horrific laws and to work with the global community to guarantee the safety of all those named as LGBTI in the Ugandan tabloid Red Pepper," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

The Australian Greens have called for Scott Morrison to be sacked from the Ministry following revelations that the violent attacks on Manus Island took place inside the refugee prison camp, resulting in the death of asylum seeker Reza Berati.

"The Prime Minister must sack the Minister and close his cruel refugee prisons immediately," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

Greens call for Royal Commission into offshore detention incidents and death

The Australian Greens have called on Tony Abbott to initiate a Royal Commission into the conditions and management of Australia's offshore detention camps, which led to the death of an Iranian refugee while in Australia's care on Manus Island.

"The tragedy of a refugee killed while in Australia's care should be the final nail in the coffin for Labor and the Abbott government's morally bankrupt and cruel offshore processing regime," Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne said.
