Ditch the dud deal and bring the refugees to Australia

Malcolm Turnbull should scrap his refugee "deal" with the US and bring people detained on Manus Island and Nauru to Australia , Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that Mr Turnbull is placing his faith in a xenophobic and anti-immigration US President who has a track record of dishonesty and lies," Senator McKim said.

"Only a fool would take Trump at his word."

End the US impasse, bring refugees to Australia

Malcolm Turnbull should end the uncertainty and confusion over the US refugee "deal" and bring the people to Australia, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"It is now clear that the US deal relies on an unhinged, dishonest President," Senator McKim said.

"People should be very concerned about what Mr Turnbull is prepared to do to get this deal done."

"As we now know, the deal does not commit the US to accept a single person."

Mr Turnbull, Bring Them Here

The federal government should be resettling people detained in camps on Manus Island and Nauru in Australia.

"Of course our hearts would lift to see people out of the camps, but they are Australia's responsibility and should be brought here," Greens Immigration spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said.

"Reports of a deal with the US lack any detail whatsoever, but the idea of sending Muslim refugees to Donald Trump's USA raises some concerns."

"We also have no idea what would happen to people detained in the camps who have not been found to be genuine refugees."

Greens urge PM to accept Victorian offer to let asylum seekers stay

The Australian Greens have today urged Malcolm Turnbull to accept the Victorian Government's offer to give refuge to the 267 asylum seekers slated for deportation to Nauru.

If Malcolm Turnbull is truly different and if he's actually running this government then he will step up and let them stay," said Greens Leader Richard Di Natale.

"This is a question of leadership.

"The Victorian Government has today displayed the leadership and courage that has been sadly lacking from both Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten this week.

Greens say Paris attacks should inspire empathy with asylum seekers

The Australian Greens have welcomed the Syrian refugees beginning to arrive under Australia's emergency intake, cautioning the world against lashing out in anger over the horrific attacks in Paris.

"A united Australian community is much stronger in helping to defeat these threats than one that's divided. Hate is the problem here, it's not the answer," said Greens Leader Richard Di Natale.

"As a community we need to recognise that the people seeking refuge in Australia are fleeing the kind of violence and barbarism that we've seen in Paris.

Syrian air strikes: PM Abbott throws Australia onto the wrong side of history

The Australian Greens have condemned the Abbott Government's decision to commence airstrikes in Syria, warning it will worsen the refugee crisis and aggravate extremism.

"At a time when our community is desperate to show compassion to people fleeing war in Syria, Tony Abbott is dropping bombs," said Greens Leader Richard Di Natale.

"I'm so proud of the way Australians have told the government loud and clear that we are strong enough to offer protection to people seeking refuge from war.

Australian Greens Leader Richard Di Natale is calling on the Australian government to initiate an emergency intake of 20,000 refugees fleeing sectarian violence in Syria's ongoing civil war, where over 250,000 men, women and children have already died.

"Four million people are fleeing war in Syria. Two million of those are children. To welcome 20,000 of them into our community would be such an honourable and dignified response from Australia," Senator Di Natale said.

Deal with Iran another bribe from Government over asylum seekers

The Australian Greens have expressed concern today over reports that Australia is offering changes to official Travel Warnings to Iran in exchange for approval to forcibly deport Iranian asylum seekers.

"It seems the Australian Government is prepared to bribe anyone and everyone to get rid of asylum seekers wherever possible. First it was Nauru, PNG and Cambodia, this week it was cash bribes to people smugglers and now it's the Iranian Government," Greens Immigration spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young said today.

Greens will use Senate powers to reveal truth on cash bribes for smuggling

The Greens will use parliamentary powers to force the Government to table documents relating to the interception and 'turn-back' of an asylum seeker boat including any payments of monies to individuals on board.  The Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has said the Order to Produce Documents will be put to the Senate as early as Monday next week.

"These allegations are extremely serious and the Parliament has both a right and responsibility to find out what has really been going on," Greens spokesperson for Immigration Sarah Hanson-Young said.
