Abbott government needs new policies, not new enforcers

Greens Leader Christine Milne says Tony Abbott's frontbench reshuffle won't matter much to everyday Australians who are still being threatened with the same cruel budget measures.

"The faces have changed, but not the policies. This government is too arrogant to accept its cruel agenda has been rejected by the community and the Senate," said Senator Milne.

"If the Prime Minister doesn't listen to people and change his policies, he's going to find that people will change the Prime Minister.

Prevention better than cure, social cohesion is key

The Australian Greens are pushing for a comprehensive plan to strengthen Australian society and help make all Australians safer at home, announcing legislation to establish an independent national body to build social cohesion and prevent extremism. The Australian Centre for Social Cohesion (ACSC) would be tasked with overseeing the development and implementation of key preventative programs that combat social exclusion and stop young Australians from becoming radicalised.

Tony Abbott needs to sub Joe Hockey off the field if he wants to make any headway with his Budget, Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt said today.

"On same day that the Commonwealth Bank announces record profits, we see that wages growth is the lowest in 17 years and real wages are going backwards. Meanwhile Joe Hockey says the poor don't drive but the big banks should be let off the hook."

Maurice Newman's latest comments on climate change are almost deranged and an embarrassment to the government, leaving Tony Abbott no choice but to dump him as head of the Prime Minister's Business Advisory Council, Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt said today.

"Maurice Newman's latest statements are channelling the flat earth commentary of a lunatic fringe," Mr Bandt said.

"They are almost deranged and an embarrassment to the government. Tony Abbott needs to repudiate these views and dump Mr Newman from his business advisory council.
