The Australian Greens have raised concerns that announcements for increased funding to the NT through Stronger Futures are being partly delivered through cuts to national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs.

"SEAM is a bad policy the $85.6 million committed to this project should be spent on better programs. Continuing this approach undermines the other investments announced today by the Minister," said Senator Siewert.

Funding shouldn’t be tied to Intervention legislation

The Australian Greens said today that while the funding announcement for homelands, police, night patrols and legal services in the Northern Territory was welcomed, the services should not be linked to the Government’s continuation of the NT Intervention.

“There is no doubt that these resources are needed for on-the-ground services in the homelands in the Northern Territory, but it isn't enough to merely continue existing funding - much more is needed," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Issues said today.

Greens speak out against ‘offensive and untrue’ claims about Stronger Futures

The Australian Greens have condemned attempts to mislead organisations into supporting the Stronger Futures legislation, which extends and expands the NT Intervention.

“A campaign appears to have started, presumably with the backing of the Government, to imply that by not supporting Stronger Futures, the Greens are opposing the ongoing funding of essential services in the NT- including services for primary health,” Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

“Regardless of where it originated, this campaign is offensive and it is untrue.
