Govt must move fast to recognise local govt though election referendum

Federal Labor is getting dangerously close to missing the deadline to hold a referendum on local government constitutional recognition to coincide with the September election, said Greens local government spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon, following reports today of NSW councils in dire need of secure federal funding to fix neglected bridges (SMH today, 'Councils go cap in hand to O'Farrell, Gillard for quick fix on decaying infrastructure').

Badgerys Creek airport talk nothing but a political fix

Commenting on the latest round of wrangling over a second airport site Greens transport spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said Minister Anthony Albanese has dragged his feet on Sydney Airport for years issuing reports and setting up processes that only deliver non-solutions.

"The Federal Labor and Coalition governments have ruled out Badgerys Creek as an airport site in the past and the speculation this suburb in Sydney’s west  is back  under consideration is simply game playing coming into the next election,” Senator Rhiannon said.

Parramatta Girls Home fire should spark national heritage listing: Greens

Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon says a recent fire destroying a wing of the 1840s Roman Catholic Orphanage should act as new impetus for Federal Heritage Minister Mr Tony Burke to fast track national heritage listing of the Parramatta Female Factory Precinct.

"This sad event shows how this unique collection of buildings remains vulnerable to fire, vandalism and profit hungry developers while both federal and NSW governments stand idly by," Senator Rhiannon said.

Albanese airport plans short on vision, limit economic potential

Commenting on Federal Transport Minister Antony Albanese's latest airport announcement Greens transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said that the Minister's comments sound more like those of an airline CEO than a responsible Labor MP ("Anthony Albanese backs expansion in Asian century", The Australian). 

"As a Labor Minister Mr Albanese should be working to ensure economic growth associated with airport expansion is not at the expense of local residents," Senator Rhiannon said.
