The Australian Greens call on the Government to respond to international scrutiny of its recent cuts to parenting payments and to take immediate steps to reduce the number of people living in poverty in Australia by supporting Senator Siewert's Caring for People on Newstart and Caring for Single Parents Private Members Bills

Australian Greens Continue to Provide a Voice for Those Impacted Under Mean-Spirited Newstart ‘Reforms.’




The Australian Greens today received a collection of gestures of hope in the form of love hearts from the Single Parents Action Group, SPAG, outside of the Tasmanian Parliament.

 Senator Whish-Wilson said the issue of the Government’s so-called ‘reforms’ to the Single Parent Allowance and Newstart had struck a nerve in Tasmania.

Greens introduce Bill to raise Newstart and Youth Allowance by $50 per week

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Families and Community Services has introduced a Private Members Bill to Parliament which increases Newstart and Youth Allowance by $50 per week.

“In a world that is getting harsher, it is government’s role to make things easier for all Australians. Punishing job seekers by condemning them to poverty is not contributing to the caring society that the majority of people want for themselves and their children,” Senator Siewert said today.

Federal Greens join protest against parenting payment cuts


Greens MPs have spoken at a Parliament House rally in Canberra today, taking a stand against cuts to parenting payments that have forced single parents to move to the inadequate Newstart Allowance and lose between $60 and $100 per week.

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert, spokesperson for Families and Community Services and Deputy Leader Adam Bandt said today that the Government was failing in its primary responsibility of caring for vulnerable people.

Australian Greens Remain Committed to Fighting Un-just Newstart Changes

 Tasmanian Senator Peter Whish-Wilson is continuing the Australian Greens campaign to reverse recent changes to the Newstart and Single Parent payments today through handing out fliers outside the Glenorchy Centrelink in conjunction with the Tasmanian Young Greens and Single Parents Action Group, SPAG.

More than 5000 fliers will be dropped across Tasmania today and during the coming days.

Greens urge Minister Macklin to live on Newstart

Responding to Minister Macklin's comments in Melbourne on New Year's Day, Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson for Family and Community Services said, "If Minister Macklin really believes that she could live on Newstart for an extended period of time, she has demonstrated how little she understands of life below the poverty line.

"Minister Macklin obviously has little understanding of the cost of living and the problems of trying to make ends meet when living on income support. If she did she wouldn't be making claims that she could live on it.

Parenting payment cuts start to hurt single parents

The Australian Greens have called on Federal MPs who supported parenting payment cuts to visit community relief centres over the coming weeks to understand the financial pressures being faced by families affected by the cuts.

"From today, up to 84,000 single parents will begin to move from parenting payment to Newstart Allowance, a reduction of household income of between $60 to $100 per week," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on families and community services said today.

Un-happy new year for thousands of SA single mums

Around 10,000 South Australian single parents will have their support payments slashed following changes that will take effect from January the 1st.

“It’ll be an unhappy new year for thousands of families around South Australia this January when their already meagre single parents’ payments are cut,” Greens Senator for South Australia, Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“Forcing thousands of single mums to survive on Newstart is the Labor Party’s way of finding a budget surplus on the backs of Australia’s most vulnerable families.
