Rudd changes must help all single parents on Newstart

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said today finally the ALP was following the Greens lead when it comes to helping vulnerable people stuck on inadequate payments like Newstart.

Figures show need for urgent action to help jobseekers into work

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson for families and community services said today the Government needs to take urgent action to improve the level of support provided for people looking for work.

"Figures being reported today underscore the concerns I have about the number of people who may be cycling in and out of work," Senator Siewert said today.

"These figures, obtained through questions I asked in Senate Estimates, show that large numbers of people are ending up back on Newstart after job placements.

The Australian Greens have welcomed ongoing support from around the country for a $50 increase to Newstart Allowance, voiced today in an open letter signed by more than forty leaders from the charity, union and community welfare sectors.

Working single parents need support, not punishment

Australian Greens  Senator Rachel Siewert says working single parents on Newstart deserve far better support from the Federal Government, rather than ongoing punishment.

“The Australian Institute of Family Studies report ‘Parents Working Out Work’ shows us that the number of working single mothers has increased significantly over the last two decades, with the employment participation rate increasing by 13%,” Senator Siewert said today.
