EPA recommendation on uranium mine a dangerous new low

The Environmental Protection Agency should change its name after today's appalling recommendation to approve Western Australia's first uranium mine at Wiluna, WA Greens said today.

Greens national spokesperson on nuclear policy Senator Scott Ludlam said "The proposal by Toro Energy is full of gaping holes. If the EPA is prepared to back this half-baked, messy scheme - it sets a dangerous low standard for uranium mining in Western Australia".

James Price Point protests the product of Barnett’s wilful myopia

WA Senator Scott Ludlam arrived in Broome today to support the protests against the proposed James Price Point gas hub.

Senator Ludlam said the Barnett Government had "refused to listen and refused to learn" why James Price Point should not be the site of the gas hub.

"The protests are a direct result of a failure of policy on the part of the Western Australian Government. This is a pristine site, and should never have been considered for this project."

Tarkine Road re-appearance should trigger Emergency Heritage Listing

The re-lodgement of the Tarkine Road for federal approval gives Environment Minister, Tony Burke, an immediate reason to finally put the Tarkine wilderness on the National Heritage list, the Australian Greens said today.

The Tasmanian government's withdrawal of the Tarkine Road proposal, which would have a devastating impact on the last remaining disease-free Tasmanian devil population, was given by the Minister as the key reason previous emergency listing of the Tarkine was allowed to expire.

Tarkine Devil Project a great step but Tarkine National Heritage vital

The Tarkine Devil Project jointly launched by Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, today will be an important step in saving the Tasmanian devil from extinction, but National Heritage protection for the Tarkine wilderness is needed to compliment it.

"If we are really determined to stop the Tassie devil from going the way of the Tassie tiger, protecting the habitat of the last wild healthy population of devils is a must," Senator Milne said

Milne welcomes Tarkine Rd decision - time for a Tarkine National Park

Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, today welcomed the Bartlett government's decision to dump the Tarkine Road and called on the government to now move for a Tarkine National Park.

"Now is a great opportunity to transfer the funds that had been allocated to the destructive road into our critically under-resourced Parks and Wildlife Service."
