One day and two inquiries into examination of the media reform package, the Greens are not ready to throw the Convergence and Finkelstein Reviews into the dustbin.

"We have expressed concerns about the process and content of the media package proposed by the government on a ‘take it or leave it basis', however, parts of it have merit and should proceed," Australian Greens Communications spokesperson Senator Ludlam said today.

"Giving up on the reforms means the bullies have won.

The Australian Greens today urged the Federal Government to finally take action on media reform.

"It is time the Government brought forward the full package of media reforms; a package that should promote media diversity and prevent further concentration of media ownership, protect the ABC and SBS, and promote community broadcasting.

The Australian Greens renewed their call for media law reform today as mining billionaire Gina Rinehart moved one step closer to controlling Fairfax Media by installing a close associate on the company's board.

The Australian Greens will introduce into Parliament this week a Bill to protect the democratic interests of all Australians by implementing a public interest test for changes in control of major media companies, based on that recommended by the Convergence Review and the ACCC.

"If we want to ensure that all Australians benefit from a flourishing, independent, diverse media landscape now and into the future, we have an obligation to start acting to protect that landscape," said Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne.

The Australian Greens have written to Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and Opposition spokesperson Malcolm Turnbull proposing that Parliament legislate to prevent media proprietors interfering in the editorial line of their media platforms.

The majority finding by a British Parliamentary committee that media kingpin Rupert Murdoch is unfit to run an international company reinforces the need to reform Australia's media ownership laws, the Australian Greens said today.

The Greens communications spokesperson, Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam, said the long-running phone hacking scandal engulfing the Murdoch empire bolstered the Convergence review finding that the concentration of media ownership in Australia is harmful.

The Greens have welcomed the final report of the Convergence Review into Australia's changing media landscape.

"For the first time in years we have a focus on the harm caused by concentration of media ownership. The Greens will carefully evaluate proposals to reform media ownership rules and introduce a public interest test," Australian Greens communications spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam said today.
