Greens warn Labor not to adopt ‘take it or leave it’ approach

Responding to ‘hairy chested’ comments today from Labor’s climate Minister that the government would not alter its weak climate position, Greens Leader Adam Bandt has warned that Labor should ditch its ‘my way or the highway’ approach to its climate laws, saying Labor’s vote went backwards and Labor did not secure a majority in the Senate, where the Greens’ presence grew.

Mr Bandt said the Greens wanted to work constructively with the government, but Labor could not take the Greens’ votes in the Senate for granted.

Fitzgibbon exit puts 2030 test on Labor

Australian Greens Leader Adam Bandt has responded to Joel Fitzgibbon’s resignation by calling on Labor to join the Greens in pressuring Scott Morrison to lift his 2030 game.

“The Greens are putting pressure on Scott Morrison over his weak 2030 targets and we hope Labor will now help us,” said Mr Bandt.

“If we don’t take urgent action in the next decade, we may pass the point of no return, where global heating becomes an unstoppable chain reaction.

“Scott Morrison’s woeful 2030 targets have Australia on track for over 4 degrees of global warming.

Labor's gas document a white flag on climate and renewable jobs

Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, has responded to Labor’s reported capitulation to the Liberals on coal and gas by saying that with both parties agreeing on increasing new coal and gas exports and Labor having dropped any short-term emissions target, there is currently no difference between the parties on reining in the biggest sources of climate pollution.

“Labor has just agreed with the Liberals on coal and gas,” said Greens Leader, Adam Bandt.

“In a climate emergency, you don’t expand coal and gas developments.

Labor shouldn't be warming to a Liberal gas plan that's seriously fracking bad: Greens

The Greens have responded to Labor’s official endorsement (through its Shadow Resources Minister, Joel Fitzgibbon) of the Liberals’ plan to subsidise gas, saying the establishment parties were robbing the public purse to make the climate emergency worse.

"Labor shouldn't be warming to a Liberal plan that will dangerously heat our planet," Mr Bandt said.

“By backing the Liberals’ gas-led recovery, Labor is giving up on the Paris Agreement.

Shadow Minister puts Labor in lockstep with Liberals on climate

Australian Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, says statements today from Labor’s Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Resources, Joel Fitzgibbon, put the Labor party in lockstep with the Liberals on climate action, as he called on the Opposition to instead join the Greens in demanding stronger 2030 targets from the government.

“If we don't take stronger climate action by 2030 we're screwed, so when a shadow minister lines Labor up with the Liberals on climate, it is a recipe for the coal-fuelled collapse of civilisation,” Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, said.

Net zero by 2050 and new coal mines will not save us from the climate emergency: Bandt

Australian Greens Leader Adam Bandt has warned that achieving net zero emissions by 2050 while opening new coal mines will not save us from the climate emergency, and called on Anthony Albanese and Scott Morrison to commit to a strong 2030 target and a plan to phase out coal.

Today, Labor Leader Anthony Albanese committed the party to a target of net zero emissions by 2050, however he refused to indicate a 2030 target or commit to concrete steps to cut pollution and tackle the climate crisis.

Labor’s 2050 target blows 2 degrees and gives up on Paris Agreement: Bandt

Australian Greens Leader Adam Bandt has slammed Anthony Albanese’s move to adopt a net zero by 2050 pollution target, saying it will blow the 2 degrees budget and mean Australia gives up on the Paris agreement.

It is expected that Anthony Albanese will tomorrow announce that Labor will adopt a target of net-zero by 2050, without any target for 2030. Based on current projections, a simple straight-line reduction from 2022-2050 would blow Australia’s ‘2 degrees’ budget (as determined by the Climate Change Authority) and would likely exceed the 2 degrees budget as early as 2034.

Labor joining the Liberals in hugging coal: Bandt

Adam Bandt 9 Feb 2020

Greens Leader Adam Bandt MP has slammed Labor Deputy Leader Richard Marles comments on ABC's Insiders program and called on Anthony Albanese to overrule his deputy and join the Greens in opposing coal.

Quotes attributable to Adam Bandt MP:

"It's 3 years to the day since Scott Morrison hugged a lump of coal and now Labor is doing the same.

"The coal huggers in the Liberals want to build new coal-fired power stations and open up new coal mines and Labor is refusing to join with the Greens to stop them.

Labor is in climate chaos. Where's Albo?

The ALP is melting down over climate policy, and Anthony Albanese is missing in action.

“The Government’s climate policy is shockingly weak, and rather than showing leadership, Labor looks like they’re about to join them. At a time when we need to be declaring a climate emergency, WA Labor is declaring climate surrender,” said Leader of the Australian Greens Dr Richard Di Natale.
