Durban agreement leaves gaping gaps on emissions, finance and legal form

The wishy-washy agrement struck in Durban today completely fails the climate, the Australian Greens said today.

Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, just returned from Durban, said, "The world is now on track to exceed 2 degrees of warming under this agreement. No matter how much nuancing of the words is done, the fact is the political reality does not match the scientific reality.

Australia must not rort Kyoto protocol rules

Australians should be very troubled that the Gillard Government is trying to rort the system through renegotiating the rules on Land Use Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) under the Kyoto Protocol in at the Durban climate conference. the Australian Greens said today.

New accounting rules being pushed by Australia and other developed countries like Canada, if adopted, could hide globally half a billion tones of greenhouse gas emissions from logging whilst at the same time setting up a scam that could result in logging credits instead of debits.

Australia must support extended Kyoto Protocol

The global climate talks in Durban are deadlocked over how to proceed when the Kyoto Protocol first commitment period ends in 2012 and Australia must show leadership, Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne said in Durban today.

"It would be an enormous blow to climate action globally if the legally binding Kyoto protocol is allowed to lapse post 2012 with no legally binding treaty or even a pathway towards one," Senator Milne said.

Cancun puts Forestry Tasmania on notice

Forestry Tasmania's years of escaping scrutiny and responsibility for its greenhouse gas emissions from logging carbon-rich native forests are coming to end thanks to the Cancun climate agreements, the Australian Greens said today.

"The global community has long recognized that one of the cheapest and fastest ways of reducing emissions is to protect the massive carbon stores in the world's forests," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.
