Topic: Australian Heritage Council's report - Dampier Archipelago

1. On what date was the Australian Heritage Council's report on the World Heritage values of the rock art of the Dampier Archipelago handed down to your department.

Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon says a recent fire destroying a wing of the 1840s Roman Catholic Orphanage should act as new impetus for Federal Heritage Minister Mr Tony Burke to fast track national heritage listing of the Parramatta Female Factory Precinct.

"This sad event shows how this unique collection of buildings remains vulnerable to fire, vandalism and profit hungry developers while both federal and NSW governments stand idly by," Senator Rhiannon said.

Associate Professor Sarah Maddison delivered the 12th annual Juanita Nielsen Lecture on the topic "Boiled frogs? Understanding the state of public debate in Australia today" on 28 August 2012.

Senator WRIGHT: Good morning, everyone. I am going to first of all ask about the former heritage division within the department, which is now known as the heritage and wildlife division. My questions relate to the heritage budget following this internal reorganisation. I note that the heritage division received a significant funding cut in the last budget in the order of 30 per cent over the forward estimates. And that followed a 19 per cent cut the year before.

Yesterday's claims by the Government that the Your Community Heritage grants were a 'new and practical approach to heritage conservation' ring hollow, with the budget revealing this important program will not be continuing beyond 2013, the Australian Greens said today.
