Parramatta Girls Home fire should spark national heritage listing: Greens

Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon says a recent fire destroying a wing of the 1840s Roman Catholic Orphanage should act as new impetus for Federal Heritage Minister Mr Tony Burke to fast track national heritage listing of the Parramatta Female Factory Precinct.

"This sad event shows how this unique collection of buildings remains vulnerable to fire, vandalism and profit hungry developers while both federal and NSW governments stand idly by," Senator Rhiannon said.

The community campaign to stop the unacceptable destruction of Indigenous heritage at Sandon Point on the New South Wales South Coast is outstanding. Sandon Point is a site of enormous cultural significance to local Aboriginal people. This is an inspiring story, but also a tragic one that epitomises the failures of both the state and federal governments to meet their responsibilities to protect and preserve our unique Indigenous cultural heritage.

Estimates: Heritage Funding Cuts

Senator WRIGHT: Good morning, everyone. I am going to first of all ask about the former heritage division within the department, which is now known as the heritage and wildlife division. My questions relate to the heritage budget following this internal reorganisation. I note that the heritage division received a significant funding cut in the last budget in the order of 30 per cent over the forward estimates. And that followed a 19 per cent cut the year before.
