Greens plan to close loopholes on greyhound overseas trade

Greens animal welfare spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon has moved to shut down federal loopholes that allow Australian greyhounds to be exported to Macau for racing at the infamous Canidrome club in China. 

"I am seeking advice on what regulations or law changes are needed to close the loophole that allows greyhounds to be exported,” Senator Rhiannon said. 

“We have to end this cruel trade.

“If the Turnbull government fails to act to close the existing loophole, the Greens will consider moving a Private Members Bill to end the trade in greyhounds.

Federal, state Greens statement on NSW greyhound racing ban reversal

The decision of the major parties to back the continuation of the greyhound industry in NSW is tragic. It is a setback. But in recent months there have also been considerable achievements as more people have become aware of the need to shut down this cruel industry. 

Sadly for now the suffering of thousands of animals will continue. But it is inevitable that greyhound racing in Australia will end. There are only eight countries where this cruel sport continues on a commercial scale.

Historic NSW victory shows it’s time to ban greyhound racing across Australia – Greens launch national campaign

Following the historic NSW decision to ban greyhound racing the Australian Greens have launched a national campaign to ban greyhound racing in all states and territories.   

Senator Lee Rhiannon joined ACT Greens spokesperson for animal welfare Caroline Le Couteur in Canberra to celebrate the victory and launch the national campaign. 

“The historic win in NSW has given great encouragement to us that we can win a nationwide ban,” said Senator Rhiannon.
