Green recovery needed to lock in emissions reductions

Leader of the Australian Greens Adam Bandt MP has said figures showing an 18% drop in emissions as a result of the coronavirus are doomed to be short-lived under the Liberals' gas led recovery, urging the government to 'lock in' the drop by phasing out coal & gas and massively funding renewables.

"It's pathetic that the Liberals needed an economy-wrecking pandemic to see a drop in emissions," Adam Bandt MP said.

"If Tony Abbott hadn't torn up the Greens-secured carbon price in 2014, we'd have this kind of drop permanently  without having to shut down the economy.

Gov's pathetic emissions figures based off dead livestock and shattered dreams

Today’s pathetic emissions reduction figures confirm the government is set to waste another year in reducing carbon pollution instead of embracing a renewable-powered hydrogen revolution, Leader of the Australian Greens, Adam Bandt MP, said today.

“Angus Taylor must be looking at the graph upside down. Today’s emissions data confirms we will not meet the Paris Agreement goals and that global warming will exceed dangerous thresholds,” Mr Bandt said.

Bandt: PM's technology target nothing more than a smokescreen

The Prime Minister's leaked plan to adopt a so-called "technology target" instead of committing to Australia reaching net zero emissions by 2050 is nothing more than a smokescreen, said Leader of The Australian Greens Adam Bandt, MP.

"We're in a climate emergency and yet instead of coming up with a plan to phase out coal like Germany has done, Scott Morrison is throwing up a technology smokescreen," Mr Bandt said.

WA gas industry is a colossal, national climate bomb: Greens

The Australian Government’s push for liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a low-emissions fossil fuel has been exposed with a new report finding no evidence LNG  is any ‘cleaner’ than coal.

The Conservation Council of Western Australia’s Clean State report states an international review of LNG infrastructure found the threat to the climate from LNG is ‘as large or larger than coal’ when levels of methane emissions are included.

Europe sets post-2020 pollution reduction target at 40%. Where is Australia’s ambition?

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has commended the leaders of the European Union for today setting an emissions reduction target of 40 per cent by 2030, saying Australia's 2020 target is disastrously inadequate and must be drastically increased for 2030.

"For the health of our communities and the health of our economy, Tony Abbott needs to pull his head out of the sand and get real about action on climate change," said Senator Milne.

New emissions figures expose PM Abbott’s carbon price lies

New figures released today will deepen Australia's embarrassment at the UN Climate Summit, confirming the Abbott government has proudly dismantled a policy that was working to bring down pollution.

The latest Greenhouse Gas Inventory report shows nationwide emissions fell 1.1 per cent in the year to March 2014, smashing the previous record of -0.8 per cent, set in the year to December 2013.

"Under the carbon price that Tony Abbott repealed, Australia's emissions were falling faster and faster," says Greens Leader Christine Milne.

Business should lead and help end global warming policy farce - Greens

The Australian Greens say Australian business have an opportunity to help end the global warming policy farce and avoid Mr Palmer's yellow tape by supporting emissions trading.

"The Abbott government is incompetent, incapable of negotiating with the Senate, and so bloody-minded that they've agreed to push through an amended law without any consultation or any understanding of what those amendments will do," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

"What sort of government gets so desperate that it says it will support a law without understanding what it means?

Abbott stuck in reverse while Obama takes action on global warming

Responding to President Obama's new and more ambitious climate policy, the Greens say Australia is being leapfrogged by the US when it comes to taking action to reduce carbon pollution, because of Tony Abbott's last century and anti-science policy to abolish the price on pollution.

"President Obama has shown up the Prime Minister as completely out of step on global warming. Barrack is moving forward but Tony is stuck in reverse," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

National Greenhouse Accounts bolster case to keep carbon pricing

The Australian Greens are accusing the Abbott government of selective hearing, as the new National Greenhouse Accounts out today show emissions are continuing to drop.

"The data is up on the Environment Department website but you won't hear about it from the Minister, because the figures don't fit with the Abbott government's rhetoric," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"Every one of these quarterly reports has seen emissions drop in areas covered by the carbon price, since it kicked in on July 1, 2012. In this latest report, energy emissions are down 5 per cent.

Stop pretending Mr Rudd

"Prime Minister Rudd has to stop pretending that former Prime Minister Gillard didn't achieve an Emissions Trading Scheme," Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"She did what he couldn't do.

"Julia Gillard negotiated with the Greens and got a great result.

"Rudd negotiated with the Coalition and failed.

"I would be delighted to debate Mr Rudd at the Press Club on climate change."
