Defence Force callout legislation

The increased use of the Defence Force on Australian streets is deeply concerning, Australian Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim says.

“Legislation to make it easier to call out the Defence Force is a worrying and dangerous development,” Senator McKim said.

“Yet again, the Government has introduced major national security legislation without demonstrating the need or making the case as to how it would make Australians safer.”

“This is a serious and fundamental change to domestic policing arrangements, and to the way security forces interact with the public.”

Senate passes Greens/Xenophon motion on PFC contamination

Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon has welcomed the support of the Senate in calling on the Turnbull government to publicly disclose how the $55 million funding package promised for PFC remediation has been spent, and to pay for residents living in Williamtown, Fullerton Cove and Salt Ash under similar contamination conditions to those inside the Red Zone to be connected to town water.

Defence cash splash obliterates future budget surpluses

Greens Defence and Finance Spokesperson, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, has released analysis from the Parliamentary Library showing that the new Defence spending outlined in yesterday’s White Paper has obliterated future budget surpluses.

Senator Whish-Wilson said, “Scott Morrison’s and Mathias Cormann’s ‘credible path to surplus’ appears to have taken a detour via the South China Sea.
