Greens announce plans to Renew WA

More than 24,000 full-time jobs a year would be created in Western Australia under the Greens plan to rapidly transform Australia’s energy system to renewables by 2030.

Greens Leader, Senator Richard Di Natale said:

Time to invest in remote area firefighting

With climate change driving increased fire risk in Australia, the Commonwealth should investigate a national remote area firefighting capacity, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

"It's negligent of the Government not to even investigate a national remote area firefighting capacity despite a Senate Committee recommending it," Senator McKim said.

"The goal should be to stop dangerous climate change, not find a political fix that won’t keep the climate safe or save the reef," Dr Di Natale said.

“It’s clear that the Government finally understands you can’t just keep cutting spending without raising revenue. But this is a budget with no vision or direction for the country. It isn’t a roadmap for the future, it’s a highway to nowhere,” Dr Di Natale said.

Coalition and Labor’s Reef report card FAIL

The Australian and Queensland government’s Reef 2050 plan annual report is a total fail because it ignores the dangerous threat posed by global warming driven by mining and burning of coal and gas.

Australian Greens Deputy Leader and environment spokesperson Senator Larissa Waters said:

“The Reef Plan report card deserves a total fail for ignoring the impacts of global warming, under-funding water quality measures, and trying to gloss over the failure to reinstate strong land clearing laws.

Greens establish Senate Inquiry into the impact of climate change on fisheries and our oceans

Greens spokesperson for Healthy Oceans, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, has welcomed the support of the Senate in agreeing to establish an Inquiry into the impact of climate change on our fisheries and on marine biodiversity.

“The nation has been shocked by the now annual bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef from heating oceans. What everyone may not be aware of is that global warming is driving dramatic changes throughout Australia’s marine estate and this is having enormous impacts.
