Responding to reports Tony Abbott is planning to make petrol more expensive, Acting Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, said Tony Abbott's refusal to end fuel subsidies for wealthy miners proved the Coalition was siding with big business against everyday Australians.

"Tony Abbott's plan is for people to keep forking out billions each year just so the likes of Gina Rinehart can buy cheap diesel," said Mr Bandt.

"By making people pay more for petrol and GP visits while giving wealthy miners subsidised fuel, Tony Abbott has revealed his new three word slogan: ‘Stuff you, mate'.

If everyone has to contribute to lifting Australia's budget out of the red, as Treasurer Joe Hockey is so fond of saying, then the Australian Greens say it's unfair and unreasonable for big mining companies to be excused on three fronts.

The Australian Greens are dismayed that National Landcare program has been targeted for a 50% cut in the Commission of Audit report.

"A 50% cut in funding will put important Landcare, natural resource management, environmental programs and jobs at risk and comes as the movement celebrates the 25th anniversary of Landcare " Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens agriculture spokesperson said today.

Any Abbott government paid parental leave scheme must be fully funded by big business, the Australian Greens said today.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne said big questions remained over the funding of the scheme as proposed by Tony Abbott.

"Any scheme needs to be fair, affordable and legislated as a workplace right. The scheme would also need to be fully funded by big business, not budget cuts," Senator Milne said.

The Australian Greens say Anglicare's Australia Rental Affordability Snapshot demonstrates the urgent need for an increase in income support payments such as Newstart Allowance.

"The snapshot clearly demonstrates that people on low incomes like income support payments are unable to afford rentals in Australia

The Australian Greens say the Abbott government is making its approach to income support very clear in revealing that income management will be one of the only areas to get more funding this May.

"Income management is a failed, top down demonising approach to those on income support," said Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Community Services.

If budgets reveal the true character of a government, as Prime Minister Abbott told an audience last night in Sydney, the Greens say Australians are about to find out how cruel the Abbott government really is.

"A budget is one of the most values-laden documents to hit the parliament each year, and the Abbott government's first budget is going to ask those who need our support to give up what little they have, so that the wealthiest in the country can continue to pollute and maximise their profits," said Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne.

The Australian Greens are warning the federal government against lurching further to the right by taking the razor to programs that care for people and protect the environment.

"It is disgraceful that Labor cuts support for single parents and refuses to increase Newstart and now wants to send the unemployed to boot camps," Australian Greens Leader Senator Milne said.

The Australian Greens said today that some of the poorest people in our community will be placed under even more financial stress if Tony Abbotts's budget becomes a reality.

"Tony Abbott is so preoccupied with keeping big business onside that he's prepared to take already meagre supplement payments of around $4 per week off jobseekers and single parents on Newstart," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on families and community services said today.
