Gender lens on Budget shows up government

The Greens condemn the Morrison Government for failing to include a gender lens in the Budget, instead leaving it to a non-profit women's organisation to do their homework for them. 

"Women are once again mopping up after the Morrison Government by applying a gender lens to the Budget, something which should have been done by government itself," said Greens Leader in the Senate and spokesperson on Women, Senator Larissa Waters.

Greens call on Liberal and Labor to ditch stage 3 tax cuts entirely

Responding to reports that Stage 3 of the government’s tax cuts, voted into law by Liberal and Labor, may not be fully repealed after the next election, Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, has called on Labor to join the Greens in taking on the government by ending the speculation and confusion around their position on the most radical, regressive tax proposal in Australian history.

“These tax cuts, whether you take the stages separately or as a whole, are a radical ideological flattening of our revenue base,” Bandt said.

Liberal & Labor put millionaires before the million unemployed with deal to pass tax cuts

Leader of the Australian Greens Adam Bandt & Economic Justice Spokesperson Nick McKim have today slammed a deal between the Labor and Liberal parties to ram through tens of billions of dollars in tax cuts and corporate welfare.

Liberal & Labor also opposed Greens amendments that would have excluded millionaires from the tax cuts, and ensured goods purchased with company tax credits were made in Australia.

“Liberal and Labor have put the millionaires ahead of the million unemployed,” said Mr Bandt.

Morrison uses Budget to silence Government accountability bodies

The Coalition is using the Federal Budget to silence public accountability and transparency bodies that have called out this Government’s corruption, Greens Leader in the Senate and Spokesperson for Democracy, Senator Larissa Waters said.

“Once again, this corrupt Government is doing all it can to avoid public scrutiny, this time using the Budget to cut funding to our accountability and transparency bodies,” Senator Waters said.

Budget fails on Closing the Gap

Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe shares the disappointment of Aboriginal communities and peak bodies of the lack of funding for First Nations in the 2020-21 Budget, in particular the lack of funding to achieve Closing the Gap strategy.

Budget fine print reveals tax cut scam

The Greens say the government’s centrepiece income tax cuts are a trickle-down scam as analysis reveals low and middle-income earners lose their ‘tax cuts’ after a year, while the wealthy keep them forever (see table below). 

The Greens are calling on Labor to reverse their support for the Liberals’ trickle-down tax cuts.

“Low-income earners’ tax cuts disappear after a year while the wealthy keep theirs’ forever,” said Greens Leader, Adam Bandt.

Budget: Government’s transport infrastructure locks in pollution to worsen the climate crisis

Greens Transport and Infrastructure spokesperson Senator Janet Rice has condemned the Morrison government for failing to invest in a green recovery that would create new jobs and build the foundations of a fair, clean economy. 

Instead, the Morrison government is doubling down on transport infrastructure that locks in pollution, props up fossil fuel corporations and will make the climate crisis even worse.
