Govt wasting money in action against Hicks’ book

The Federal Government is wasting taxpayers' money in its NSW Supreme Court action to try recovering the proceeds of David Hicks' memoir, the Australian Greens say.

"The Gillard government is creating a smokescreen in its move against Mr Hicks to deflect attention from what the government knew about his torture and detention in Guantanamo Bay and other US facilities," Greens' spokesperson for human rights, Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young, said today.

Greens disappointed by govt’s move against Hicks’ book

The Australian Greens say they are disappointed by the Federal Government's forthcoming move in the NSW Supreme Court to try recovering the proceeds of the memoir written by South Australian David Hicks.

"The government should not be taking this action against Mr Hicks but instead carry out a full and independent investigation into his torture and detention in Guantanamo Bay and other US facilities," Greens' spokesperson for human rights, Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young, said today.

Australia’s 1,500 troops should come home: Brown

Greens Leader Bob Brown today called for Prime Minister Julia Gillard to emulate US President Barack Obama's plan for an early withdrawal from Afghanistan.

"President Obama plans to remove 10,000 troops by the end of this year, and a total of 33,000 by September next year. Australia should follow the lead of the United States, Canada and the Netherlands and bring our 1,500 troops home from Afghanistan this year," Senator Brown said.

Bring combat troops home from Afghanistan - Brown

Australia should follow the lead of Canada and the Netherlands and bring our combat troops home from Afghanistan, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"Canada's 2,800 combat troops are preparing to go home. The Netherlands have already gone, after the collapse of public support and the Dutch government over whether to extend their mission," Senator Brown said in Hobart.

Great sadness at latest death in Afghanistan

The Australian Greens today expressed great sadness at the loss of another young Australian soldier's life in Afghanistan.

"The Greens join all Australians in gratitude for the service of the 23 year old combat engineer killed in Afghanistan overnight," Australian Greens Acting Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said

"We offer condolences to the family and friends of this young man tragically lost."

Twenty-seven Australian soldiers have now been killed while serving in Afghanistan.
