Morrison failing to protect Australia and must increase 2030 climate targets

Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, has described Prime Minister Scott Morrison as an utter embarrassment and a threat to Australia’s safety after Australia’s weak climate action stood in contrast to a host of nations, including our biggest trading partners, lifting their 2030 targets at President Biden’s Climate Summit.

“We are heading towards a climate cliff and as Joe Biden desperately tries to stop us going over the edge, Scott Morrison refuses to lift 2030 targets and Labor backs him in,” said Mr Bandt.

As Morrison prepares the ground to ditch Kyoto credits Liberals and Labor both failing 2030 test

Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, says the Government is right to reconsider its 2030 climate ambitions, but needs to do far more than just drop the Kyoto-credits loophole if Australia is to join the rest of the world on climate action.

“The government’s terrible 2030 targets leave Australia exposed. We’re in the critical decade and domestic political games will provide no cover for Australia’s climate-pariah status on the world stage,” Bandt said.

Time is ticking for the government and opposition to adopt science-based 2030 targets, with an upcoming US-led climate summit to be held before ANZAC Day next year, setting a deadline for Liberal and Labor on climate.

Fitzgibbon exit puts 2030 test on Labor

Australian Greens Leader Adam Bandt has responded to Joel Fitzgibbon’s resignation by calling on Labor to join the Greens in pressuring Scott Morrison to lift his 2030 game.

“The Greens are putting pressure on Scott Morrison over his weak 2030 targets and we hope Labor will now help us,” said Mr Bandt.

“If we don’t take urgent action in the next decade, we may pass the point of no return, where global heating becomes an unstoppable chain reaction.

“Scott Morrison’s woeful 2030 targets have Australia on track for over 4 degrees of global warming.

Biden win brings focus back onto 2030 targets

Greens Leader Adam Bandt says the Greens will back a new climate bill from the crossbench, but that stronger action by 2030 is needed and that the climate debate is now all about the 2030 targets.

“With Donald Trump gone, a big blocker to global climate action has been removed,” Bandt said.

“When Scott Morrison fronts next year’s climate summit, where countries are expected to lift their 2030 targets, there will be nowhere left to hide.

“Kevin Rudd, on Insiders, rightly pointed out that Liberal and Labor need to do better on 2030 targets.

Scott Morrison the Kim Jong-Un of climate as 75% of coal exports set to collapse

Scott Morrison is isolating Australia from the world and our trading partners with his stubborn refusal to accept the need to decarbonise and confront the imminent collapse of 75% of Australia’s thermal coal export market, said Greens Leader, Adam Bandt.

Australia’s top 3 coal buyers - Japan, China and South Korea - have all committed to net-zero emissions targets by 2050 or 2060. To reach those targets, they will have to decarbonise their electricity sectors even earlier, as zero-emissions electricity is key to enabling zero-emissions transport and industry.

Morrison's sham Carbon Credits a pro-fossil fuel perversion of the Carbon Price

Greens Leader Adam Bandt has slammed reports of the Morrison Government offering a carbon credit scheme to Santos, saying it represented a perversion of a carbon price that would only encourage the development of fossil fuel projects.

“We're heading towards the climate crisis cliff and with just ten years to change course, we need to be investing massively in renewables and hydrogen through a Green New Deal, not propping up unproven and unscalable unicorn technology,” Mr Bandt said.

Without green hydrogen and stronger 2030 targets, gov Energy Roadmap puts climate at risk

Leader of the Australian Greens, Adam Bandt MP, has warned that without meaningful short-term targets, a plan to phase out coal & gas and a focus on green hydrogen, the energy roadmap will be nothing better than an attempt to greenwash the Coalition's existing climate inaction.

"We’re driving towards a climate cliff and Angus Taylor is pressing the accelerator," Mr Bandt said.

Shadow Minister puts Labor in lockstep with Liberals on climate

Australian Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, says statements today from Labor’s Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Resources, Joel Fitzgibbon, put the Labor party in lockstep with the Liberals on climate action, as he called on the Opposition to instead join the Greens in demanding stronger 2030 targets from the government.

“If we don't take stronger climate action by 2030 we're screwed, so when a shadow minister lines Labor up with the Liberals on climate, it is a recipe for the coal-fuelled collapse of civilisation,” Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, said.
