TLDR: be like Terry.
Science should underpin all our political decisions, particularly climate change policy. It’s outrageous that the LNP Govt has no climate policy at all, except to support coal at every turn - including backing Adani’s plans to dig the world’s largest coal mine. I think this is due to a mix of factors: an ideological resistance to science, the LNP’s politicisation of renewable energy, the millions Big Coal donates to their re-election campaigns, and the well-paying lobbying or industry jobs they’re promised post-politics in exchange for favourable policy while in office.
I’ve had the honour of meeting with Professor Terry Hughes on several occasions and I am so grateful for his expertise and passion for our glorious Great Barrier Reef, tragically already half dead from coal-fuelled climate change.
The recent IPCC report reiterated stats I’ve known for a while: at 2 degrees of warming we lose 100% of coral reefs globally. Even if we manage to keep to 1.5 degrees of warming, we would still lose 90% of reefs. We are already at one degree of warming, we’ve lost 50% of the coral cover of the Reef, and our major parties are still hooked on coal.
Thank you to Terry and to the Stop Adani movement for the realtalk.
