This Saturday's Northern Territory election has the potential to make history by electing a strong, independent Greens voice to Parliament, Greens Leader Adam Bandt MP has said, urging voters to put the Greens at the top of the ballot paper.

The Northern Territory Greens have run their biggest campaign yet, running nine candidates in an election that has hit boiling point over concerns about fracking.

Labor shouldn't be warming to a Liberal gas plan that's seriously fracking bad: Greens

The Greens have responded to Labor’s official endorsement (through its Shadow Resources Minister, Joel Fitzgibbon) of the Liberals’ plan to subsidise gas, saying the establishment parties were robbing the public purse to make the climate emergency worse.

"Labor shouldn't be warming to a Liberal plan that will dangerously heat our planet," Mr Bandt said.

“By backing the Liberals’ gas-led recovery, Labor is giving up on the Paris Agreement.

COVID Committee gas report shows fossil fuel sector letting manufacturing

Leader of the Australian Greens Adam Bandt MP said reporting of a National COVID Commission presentation on natural gas showed a growing disconnect between our manufacturing sector and gas barons.

"Today's reports confirm that the COVID Commission is entirely captive to the interests of the fossil fuel lobby and that is hurting our manufacturing sector's chance of recovering," Mr Bandt said.

"As we recover from this pandemic, public funds should be invested in public housing and job-creating projects, not handed over to big polluting corporations.

Shadow Minister puts Labor in lockstep with Liberals on climate

Australian Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, says statements today from Labor’s Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Resources, Joel Fitzgibbon, put the Labor party in lockstep with the Liberals on climate action, as he called on the Opposition to instead join the Greens in demanding stronger 2030 targets from the government.

“If we don't take stronger climate action by 2030 we're screwed, so when a shadow minister lines Labor up with the Liberals on climate, it is a recipe for the coal-fuelled collapse of civilisation,” Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, said.

Backroom Labor boys doing their coal donors’ bidding

The Labor party backroom boys are pressuring Queensland’s Labor Premier to approve stage 3 of the New Acland coal mine, showing fossil fuel donors still call the shots, say the Australian Greens.

“Proving how powerful the coal mining lobby and their donations are on federal Labor, there’s now three federal Labor party MPs pushing the Premier to approve the Acland coal mine despite the mine’s approval currently being before the High Court,” said Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens Senate Leader and Mining and Resources spokesperson.

Greens will fight government gas pipe dream in Tech Roadmap

Greens Leader Adam Bandt has pledged to fight the government’s gas push laid out in the Technology Road Map Discussion Paper released by the government today.

Mr Bandt also said the leaked COVID Commission push for a gas-rush shows the corruption of process the government is using to develop a plan for manufacturing.

“We need to be ending Australia’s addiction to toxic methane gas not feeding it,” Mr Bandt said.

“Coal, oil and gas are the primary cause of the climate crisis. We can't solve the climate emergency and economic crisis by pouring gas on the fire.”

Coal smashing insurers and making Australia uninsurable

Today's House Economics Committee hearing into the insurance sector has revealed the extent that coal is smashing the insurance industry, highlighting the risks of the government's high-carbon 'snapback' strategy to Australian businesses and homeowners.

Greens Leader and member of the House Economics Committee, Adam Bandt, said that evidence from insurers to today’s committee hearing showed that the climate emergency could make some homes uninsurable as insurers face double-digit percentage increases in their re-insurance costs.

Govt ignoring water laws shows Big Mining running Parliament

The Greens have welcomed court proceedings against the Morrison Government for failing to apply national water laws when it assessed Adani’s North Galilee Water Scheme project, a key part of the Carmichael coal mine.

“The water trigger was introduced to protect farmers, landholders and community members by making sure the impacts on water supplies are rigorously assessed,” Greens Senate Leader and spokesperson on mining, Senator Larissa Waters said today.

Motion: Narrabri Gas Project

That the Senate—

(a) notes that:

   (i) Prime Minister Scott Morrison has signed off on a $2 billion deal with the New South Wales Government that would fast track the Narrabri Gas Project (NGP), which will extract gas from coal seams lying deep beneath the mighty Pilliga Forest,

(ii) the NGP is fiercely opposed by local communities, farmers, and ecologists because it threatens the Pilliga Forest, the Great Artesian Basin, farmers' livelihoods, and food and water security, and
