Greens demand release of Ruddock Review

The Greens will tomorrow move an order for production of documents motion in the Senate, demanding the government finally release the Ruddock Review.

“Scott Morrison is trying to dismantle anti-discrimination law for the benefit of fundamentalists and extremists,” Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim said.

“We need to see the Ruddock Review so the Australian people can see what he has up his sleeve.”

“This has been a secretive process from start to finish. Enough is enough.”

A Greens motion urging the federal government to work with state and territory governments to stop the LGBTIQ+ conversion movement has passed the senate, as the Greens call on the Prime Minister Scott Morrison to stop attacking LGBTIQ+ young people.

“I’m pleased the senate passed my motion to criminalise LGBTIQ+ conversion ‘therapies’ and condemn the broader conversion movement,” said Senator Rice, Australian Greens LGBTIQ+ spokesperson.

“I hope the Prime Minister is listening, because it was only last week that he said this wasn’t an issue for him to deal with.”

“The AFL is happy to talk the talk when it comes to LGBTIQ+ inclusion, but Hannah Mouncey’s experience shows when push comes to shove, they’re not prepared to walk the walk,” says Greens LGBTIQ+ spokesperson Janet Rice.

“It beggars belief that The AFLW’s Gender Diversity Policies are far stricter than current International Olympic Committee standards.”

“So the fact that Hannah has met all of the AFLW’s requirements but has still struggled through this process unsupported is absolutely unacceptable.”

It has only taken a week for the new Prime Minister Scott Morrison to repeatedly show he doesn’t care about the wellbeing or welfare of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer kids, say the Greens.

“Scott Morrison’s barely settled into the job, yet he’s made every effort to demonise young LGBTIQ people. He has done so much damage in such a short time,” said Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens LGBTIQ spokesperson.

PM Scott Morrison must come out and support ban on LGBTIQ conversion therapy

The new Prime Minister Scott Morrison must come out and commit to stamping out harmful conversion therapy, say the Greens.

The Greens’ call comes after survivors of conversion therapy and sexual orientation change efforts sent an open letter to the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten calling for a multi-partisan crackdown on the harmful practices.

“Conversion therapies and sexual orientation change efforts are harmful and can have fatal consequences. They must must be stamped out,” said Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens LGBTIQ spokesperson.

Greens call on federal government to pressure Malaysia over LGBTIQ crackdown

The Greens are calling on the federal government to immediately raise the strongest of concerns with the Malaysian government about oppression and persecution of the Malaysian LGBTIQ community.

The crackdown includes a horrific caning sentence due to be carried out today on two women who are being punished for having sex, the detention of 20 men in a gay club who were ordered into counselling for ‘illicit behaviour’, the brutal beating of a trans woman on the street and the removal of photographs of LGBTIQ activists from a state-sponsored exhibition.

The Australian Greens have warmly welcomed the Uniting Church decision to allow ministers to marry LGBTIQ couples.

“This is a great step forward by the Uniting Church and I would like to extend my thanks and congratulations from the Australian Greens,” said Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens LGBTIQ spokesperson.

“Love is at the heart of Christianity - this decision from the Uniting Church is a reflection of that and will be welcomed by thousands of LGBTIQ Uniting Church members and the broader community.”
