Homophobic pamphlet window into anti-marriage equality campaign

The Australian Greens have warned a homophobic pamphlet distributed by former a Liberal MP is a window into the campaign being planned by opponents of marriage equality, in preparation for a plebiscite on the issue.

"During the last week we have seen a tsunami of vile homophobia fanned by people like Cory Bernardi and George Christensen. This flyer is the latest example of this ugly campaign against equality," Greens marriage equality and sexuality spokesperson Senator Robert Simms said.

Turnbull should condemn Christensen's comments

The Australian Greens are calling for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to reprimand George Christensen after his homophobic comments about the valuable Safe Schools program to Parliament on Thursday night.

"To compare a program that's about helping young people to 'grooming' is utterly reprehensible. It's profoundly offensive and deeply hurtful," Greens sexuality spokesperson Senator Robert Simms said.

"The Prime Minister should condemn this homophobia, rather than indulging it through this senseless investigation into safe schools.

20,000 (and counting) support Safe School Coalition petition

The Australian Greens are delighted to announce the petition calling for support for the Safe Schools Coalition has received more than 20,000 signatures in less than two days.

"We launched this petition in response to the 9499 signatures on Cory Bernardi's petition against the Safe Schools program and it's come as no surprise that Australians have overwhelmingly supported a program that promotes inclusiveness of LGBTI young people in our schools," Greens sexuality spokesperson Senator Robert Simms said.

Australian Greens marriage equality spokesperson Senator Robert Simms is calling on the Government to reject the Australian Christian Lobby's push to suspend anti-discrimination laws in any plebiscite on marriage equality.

"These laws are designed to protect Australians from acts of hatred, vilification and incitement," Senator Simms said.

"By advocating for these laws to be suspended the ACL has let the cat of the bag and exposed its intention to run an ugly and discriminatory campaign against marriage equality.

Australian Greens marriage equality spokesperson Senator Robert Simms is urging the Government to abandon its plan to give taxpayer funds to organisations to run a "no" campaign in the lead up to a plebiscite on marriage equality.

"Our fears were confirmed last night when the Australian Christian Lobby revealed they have been approached and may receive taxpayer money to run a hateful "no" campaign in the government's marriage equality plebiscite," Senator Simms said.

Australian Greens marriage equality spokesperson Senator Robert Simms has sent a cheeky Valentine's Day message to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and government and crossbench senators to say love is love and everyone, regardless of sexuality, should be treated equally.

"I've sent 42 Valentine's Day cards to my colleagues in the senate this week ahead of the international day of love this Sunday," Senator Simms said.

"The message is simple - Cupid doesn't discriminate and neither should our law. Love is love.

Australian Greens marriage equality spokesperson Robert Simms says Nationals MP Andrew Broad's comments linking rams "mounting each other" in a paddock to same sex relationships must condemned by the new leader of his party.

"There seems to be a bit of a habit on the conservative side of politics for bringing these absurd and shameful comments into the debate. They really are scraping at the bottom of the barrel," Senator Simms said.
