Birds of summer from Coogee to Laos

Wherever I go, so do my bird watching interests. I have even started compiling a bird list for the parliamentary precinct: so far variety has been low. But what I miss out in terms of diversity the magpies make up for with their antics.

This summer I had what I think will be an all time bird watching highlight for me. I was swimming at Wylies Baths, a stunning rockpool at Coogee, when a small pied cormorant landed about three metres from me.

ANZ in Laos: banking on poverty

If you think ANZ is not too good on customer service and could improve its operations it is be worth your time to check out what this bank is up to far beyond Australian shores.

I have just returned from two days visiting the site of the Theun-Hinboun Dam Expansion Project in central Laos where ANZ is one of the three main financiers. From what I saw this international bank has no sense of corporate social responsibility.

Mekong dams - generating controversy

I'm in Laos looking at dam construction plans on the Mekong and its tributaries. With Australian foreign aid money and Australian companies involved this is an issue that warrants more attention from our government and media.

Laos has been promised billions of dollars in foreign currency earnings from the sale of energy from a string of dams funded by overseas aid and private investment.
