Nauru crisis

The deportation of Australia's chief medical officer from Nauru shows the entire regime of offshore detention is crumbling, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"This is a humanitarian emergency, and Scott Morrison has lost control of his detention centres," Senator McKim said.

"His entire offshore regime is crumbling before our eyes."

"This deportation confirms that there is no way for Australia's prisoners on Nauru to receive proper medical support."

Cross-party Bill to get kids off Nauru

The Greens will co-sponsor a Bill to get children and their families off Nauru to receive medical treatment in Australia.

“This Bill is a direct, urgent intervention to provide children with the medical and psychological support they so desperately need,” Greens Immigration Spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said.

“A wide range of experts, including around 6,000 Australian doctors and the United Nations have made the urgency of this situation clear.”

Speech: The Liberals peddling white supremacy in the Senate

What the coalition government did yesterday was shameless and it was shameful. You knew exactly what was in the motion; you had it for three whole weeks! So don't try to give us this rubbish that it was an administrative error. Senator Pauline Hanson's motion was exactly about white supremacy, and you knew that. You just don't give a damn!

Now that you've had a little bit of a backlash, you're trying to backtrack. How low can the Liberal-National government get in this parliament?

The cruelty must end, let’s get #KidsOffNauru

Children and their families languishing on Nauru must be brought to Australia to receive the care they need, Greens Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young says.

“There are 80 children on Nauru, and as the days go by, more are at risk of serious health issues and suicide. This is Government-sanctioned torture that must end,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

“The three Liberal MPs should be commended for their stance on fairness and compassion for refugees. It send a clear message to the Morrison Government that cruelty doesn’t cut it.

Greens to move to overturn Byron citizenship ban

The Greens will move in the Senate to disallow the draconian ban on Byron Council conducting citizenship ceremonies.

“Councils have the right to conduct citizenship ceremonies at times which respect all people, including First Nations peoples, without being bullied by the Liberals,” Greens Immigration and Citizenship spokesperson Nick McKim said.

“The people of Byron, just like the people of Darebin and Yarra, should have the right to welcome people to their communities.”

“That should never come under threat because of the paranoid jingoism of the Liberals.”

Statement on Racism

I am so sick of this rubbish. I am so sick of people who will never experience racism telling us that it doesn't exist. Senator Bernardi will never be told that you have no place in public life because of the colour of your skin. I hope that one day Australia will not need a Race Discrimination Commissioner, but that day is definitely not today, because racism is a reality and millions of people are harmed by it. Sudanese Australians are demonised by the media. Aboriginal Australians are dying in custody. Muslim Australians have been demonised and demeaned in this very parliament.

Mehreen's First Speech

Good evening. Assalamoalikum. We are gathered here today on stolen land. I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people, and pay my respects to their elders, past, present and emerging. We must recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. All Australians, whether they were born here or have come from somewhere else, have an obligation to remember: this land always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
